In the next couple of weeks it’s all about theatre! A very exciting opportunity is coming to Coventry, one that for theatre lovers can not be missed. In the Belgrade Theatres B2 stage comes Chorale – A Sam Shepard Roadshow. Billed as America’s most adventurous and poetic living playwright, Shepard has an innovative focus on poetry and collaborative theatre. There are two double bills available.
10th – 17th
The Holy Ghostly – over the shadows of a ghost-lit campfire in a lonely desert, a dying man struggles to connect with his estranged son. Haunted back-beats propel this raw-boned play to its apocalyptic climax. The War in Heaven – a moving plea from both a fallen angel and a man struggling to be heard once more, this powerful piece was co-written with actor Joseph Chaikin.
12th – 17th
Savage/Love – a rare opportunity to see this film of Shepard’s work, captured by Academy Award winning director Shirley Clarke. The Animal (You) – a drive through the landscape of Shepard’s poetry and prose, played loud to the standard rock and roll progression of C, A minor, F, G that evocatively conjures up endless highways.
There are also post-show gigs by Herons!, who provide live music for the performances, on Tues 13th & Sat 17th in the café bar.
There is also a fascinating piece of theatre coming to the Warwick Arts Centre. Or I should say coming to your own home. Avon Calling by theatre company The Other Way Works is a piece of interactive theatre you can invite to your house. Invite the Avon Lady in to your own living room for an intimate Avon Party with a theatrical twist. The performance is billed as ‘celebration of beauty in all its forms’ at least until you start to discover the dark secrets hidden under your visitor’s perfectly presented exterior. If you live within 30 minutes of Warwick Arts Centre you can book the show for your own home with a group of up to 10 of your friends and family. Performances are available Sat 10th 3pm & 7.30pm, Sun 11th 3pm & 6.30pm
