Whats On 7th July – 4th August

What’s On 7th July – 4th August

This months what’s on is twice as long as usual, covering four rather than the previous two weeks. Coventry Arts Net are working on a new project that will hopefully make the blog even more interesting and increase the amount of articles that we put out. More on that in a different article, but some interesting times are coming.

With the summer holidays coming up most of the local arts organisations are concentrating on family friendly activities. There are full programmes of family and children’s activities at most of the major institutions. See more information for the Belgrade Theatres programme here. Culture Coventry, the organisation that controls The Herbert Art Gallery, The Transport Museum, The Priory Visitors Centre and The Lunt Fort have a huge programme of activities. They can all be found here.

However for those of us who aren’t looking for child friendly fun there are still a few things out there to enjoy. Local amateur theatre has three shows in the next month. Knockabout classic comedy ‘Privates on Parade’ is at Leamington’s Loft from 9-19th of July. Also on 9-th 19th, The Priory Theatre in Kenilworth has ‘Up Pompeii’ a stage version of the popular comedy film. In a very different vein, The Criterion is offering a studio production of ‘Kes’, a story of northern hardship from 23rd-26th. The Warwick Arts Centre  is also offering an opportunity to see the National Theatres production of ‘Skylight’ through there NT: Live programme.

Coventry Open winner ‘Danny’ by Jeannie Brown

Something that you must not miss is the Coventry Open at The Herbert until 13th July. This art competition covers the whole Midlands and contains some excellent pieces of work from both amateur and budding professional artists. More importantly the majority of the work exhibited is for sale. This is a rare opportunity to purchase local art, which is a joy that should be seized with enthusiasm. I urge everyone to take a look at the artwork on offer. Much of it comes in at a bargain price. Supporting your local artists is as important as supporting your local theatre. It is a delight to have a piece of art on your wall, as opposed to a print or poster. A piece of local artwork does not just give you something nice to look at but also a conversation piece, a small slice of local culture and if you’re really lucky an investment in a young artists successful future.
