One area of the arts that I tend to avoid writing about it film. The film industry is so sprawling, international and fractured that to cover it sufficiently I would have to start a completely separate blog. However when the films in question are made by local people I tend to make an exception. Coventry isn’t entirely unfamiliar to filmmakers, with the now notorious Nativity’ series of films have all been shot in Coventry and directed by Coventry University graduate Debbie Isitt. This week you have a chance to book for the Coventry Film festival, a series of events devoted to local films and filmmakers. The festival starts with a free event on 25th June; a showing of a series of short films at Rainbows nightclub. There will then be 2 feature films, both shown at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum on 26th and 27th respectively. I wholly encourage support for these local events, not only does it encourage the next generation of Coventry filmmakers but enhances the city’s cultural landscape.
You should also take the opportunity to view and vote for local filmmaker Brian Harley’s creative ‘A Dream I Had’. You can find more information on Brian’s twitter feed @shortfilmnights, about the film and the viewster film competition. You can view the film here on vimeo.
The 21st is your last chance to see the Mead’s ‘All That Is Solid Melts into Air’. At the Herbert ‘Roman Empire’ and ‘The Coventry Open’ continue into August. Both exhibitions are well worth taking a look at, especially the Mead’s, which is Hayworth touring exhibition. Take a look before it returns to London.
